STATISTICS - HOSTA

T
he HOSTA 2009 report aims at providing relevant information for hoteliers as well as investors, bankers, project developers, municipal authorities, industry organisations and further anybody with an interest in the middle and upper segments of the Benelux Hotel industry. The 32nd edition of the annual report contains the results of the Benelux hotel industry in 2008 and was presented on 9 September 2009.

The hotel industry has been hit hard by the credit crisis, at a time when it was considered to be still recovering from the last recession. Both occupancies and average room rates have started to drop in 2008, especially in the latter half of the year. The expectation is that 2009 will also show a decrease, although the last quarter may show signs of a recovery. Most hotel managers indicate that they expect the economy to recover in 2010, with the hotel market quickly following suit. However, it may take until 2012 or, according to some hotel managers, even 2014 before the hotel market will have fully recovered. Until that time, many hotels have taken swift measures to adapt to the declining market, ranging from increased sales and promotions and adjusted pricing strategies to stricter budgeting of expenses and personnel use.

This HOSTA report is based on the information provided by a record number of 377 hotels. The 288 participating Dutch Three, Four and Five Star hotels of the HOSTA 2009, with a total of over 34,000 rooms, represent 44% of the total available rooms in these segments in The Netherlands. Additionally, the report contains data on over 11,000 rooms in Belgium and Luxemburg.

ING BANK Head Office, Amsterdam, has been a partner in this survey for more than a decade. We are proud and grateful to have their continued financial support for the production and presentation of the HOSTA 2009.
